The EACU 2021-22 Individual Championships were held over the weekend of 8-9 January 2022 at the Turner Hall in Newmarket.
This was the first Over The Board Union congress since the COVID pandemic started in March 2020, and attracted a total of
47 players in 3 sections. The results can be found at
https://www.c4results.org.uk/chess/php/DisplayEvents.php?EventId=37, and all the games in the Open section are included
in the pgn file here. Understandably, not all players were fully match fit, but you
will still find some interesting and entertaining games.
I’d like to thank all players and spectators for abiding by the stricter mask-wearing restrictions than were originally
anticipated, and for being so polite when you had questions or concerns. You all made the arbiters’ job a lot easier
than it might have been in the circumstances.
All sections were closely fought, with an outright winner in each section with 4 out of 5, and two or more players in
each section on 3.5/5. The winners were Matthew Payne in the Open section, Oliver Lenton in the U-1950 section, and Gert
De Block in the U-1650 section. The Open junior champion was Toby Cox on tie-break, and his brother Lucian won the U-1650
junior championship. Congratulations to all these worthy champions.
Richard Freeman, Chief Controller

PATRICK RIBBANDS
Patrick Ribbands, who died suddenly at the end of January, was a stalwart of
Cambridgeshire chess for as long as anyone can remember. He played and
captained teams for Linton in the Bury League for the past decade, and
played a similar role for Royston in the Cambs and Herts Leagues. Before
that he played for Cambridge City and was club president. He was a regular
at local Congresses and also in the supporting events at the British
Championships.
It will be as an indefatigable administrator that he will be best remembered
and most missed. Among many other roles he captained the Cambridgeshire
county second team for 30 years and was grading officer for 22 years. For
the East Anglian Chess Union he was County Match Controller for 22 years
and grading officer for 15 years. He initiated and ran the East Anglian
Club Championship from 2008. At the time of his death he had just
completed this season’s event online and had planned an East Anglian
online League for this spring. He had been Match Secretary in the Bury
League.
Patrick was a kindly and gentle soul, who always made sure that there were plenty
of opportunities for the lower-graded and junior players in events that he
organised. He had a long history of coaching juniors, who have themselves
paid tribute to the influence he had on them when they were starting out.
He was always full of ideas, as evidenced by the Ribbands pairing system
which he devised as an alternative to Swiss pairings, organising rapidplay
tournaments to try it out! He will be greatly missed: as a club member
always willing to fill a gap in the team sheet, as an organiser prepared
to take most things on, and as a friend.

Sad news about Marcus Misson
Received from Pete Wells of Warboys Chess Club:
Really sorry and saddened to have to convey the terrible news that Marcus died of a heart attack on Wednesday night.
As you may know he
had been unwell and was in hospital in Sheffield having treatment for his condition when it happened and that they could not rescusitate
him. He was 52 years old.
He leaves his partner Helen and two young sons, William and Matthew
The funeral will be at 12:00 on
Friday 12th July in The Free Church, St Ives, followed by a private burial
for the family.
Everyone welcome to attend the wake after
the burial but the location for that is not finalised yet.
The wake is to be held at the Dolphin Hotel, London Road, St Ives, PE27 5EP, in
the Terrace Suite. Further details here. This includes details of how to get there.
The family has asked for
donations rather than flowers. Donations, if desired, made payable to
SR.UK (Scleroderma & Raynaud's) or The Mountain Bothies Association,
may be
sent to Easton and Cook Independent Funeral Service, 2b Harding Way, St Ives, Cambs, PE27 3WR.
For those not familiar with St Ives, The Free Church is in the town centre, Market Hill, St Ives, PE27 5AL
Friday is a market day so the
town centre will be closed to vehicles.
Depending on where you are coming from best parking is probably the Cattle Market car park, off Meadow Lane (near
Waitrose)
The map at this
link shows other car parks in St Ives
